Citypoker

What is City Poker?

CityPoker - a game you can play one on one or in teams of ideally two to five players – is about finding hidden poker cards in a real-world playing field. These poker cards can then be used to get a better hand than the opposing team. You need to think strategically when planning your next move but you also need to rely on knowledge or other skills to solve small quizzes and mini games that are in your way to collecting your next card.

GPS and mobile web settings

To ensure precise positioning, a few settings have to be adjusted on your mobile device before starting the game. City Poker needs a permanent connection to the game server and therefore has to be connected to the internet during the entire game.

Moreover, the players' positions need to be located by the game. This is possible by using GPS and wireless networks, what has to be confirmed in the settings of the mobile device in advance of starting a game.

On a usual Android device the required settings can be found by choosing Settings → Location and Security. Under “My Location” you have to enable the usage of wireless networks and GPS satellites by checking the according boxes.

Rules

  • Each player or team starts from the same point and under the same mode of locomotion.
  • After both teams enter their names one player has to create a new game which can than be joined by the other team in the game room.
  • The game board appears on both players’ mobile devices after starting the game and zooming into the map. The game board of City Poker consists of five big locations which are spread out over the map. In each field there are exactly three cashes. In one of these cashes two poker cards are hidden, the other two are “false ones”.
  • In the beginning when starting a new game each player gets a specific “hand” of poker cards, both virtually on the mobile device and in reality. Furthermore they can see on the mobile device, which two poker cards are hidden in each of the five big locations (Though they don’t know in which of the three cashes per location the cards have been put) The hidden poker cards are positioned in the areas by the organizer in reality before the game starts. The players’ job is to gain the best possible poker card combination. This is done by swapping poker cards of the “poker hand” with the hidden ones in the cashes in a preferably clever way.
  • ! Notice: In each area you can only swap poker cards once! So think twice which cards and at what time you want to swap!
  • To be able to swap poker cards, the player has to know where exactly the poker cards are hidden. For this purpose the player enters one of the big areas and answers the accompanying question that automatically pops up.
  • By choosing an answer, you will get the position of a cache. If the answer was right, you will find out the right cache, where the poker cards are really hidden. Wrong answers will lead to the wrong cashes, so if you are unlucky you will search at the wrong place at first.
  • ! Notice: If you think, you are looking at the wrong place, you can answer the questions again (“Show Question”) in order to get the position of another cache at any time and as often you wanted to, provided you are within the one big area.
  • The game ends when the maximum game length in minutes is over (specified by the game organizer).
  • The player with the better poker card combination wins.

FAQ

A cache is an area visualized as a circle with a radius of 15 to 20 metres. There are three caches in each of the five big locations but only one of those three caches contains the two poker cards you are looking for. The other two are “false ones”.
You won't be told that your answer is wrong, however, you will be given coordinates for one of the false caches. If you can't find any cards this indicates that you might have got a question wrong.
Yes, in order to get the position of another cache you are allowed to answer a question again at any time and as often you wanted to, provided you are within the one big area.
You can either swap two cards, one card or none in each cache. However, you are allowed to swap cards only once in each cache so think twice which cards and at what time you want to swap.
You can swap cards in each cache only once! However, you are allowed to enter every cache as often as you would like to. Also caches with questions can be entered infinitely and you will be asked the question until you get it right.
The game ends when the maximum game length in minutes (specified by the game organizer) is over so make sure to collect a good hand by then because your cards are the only winning criteria.
Caches always are round areas that vary in size of a radius from 15 to 20 metres. This size proved to be ideal for the game.

Educational Value

City Poker is a game for everyone but teachers will find it especially valuable. By integrating City Poker into a class or an excursion you can draw on its many advantages:

City Poker is played using smartphones and is therefore interesting for children as they can use modern technology. However, as City Poker is also a location-based game it is played outdoors instead of inside in front of a computer. You get both, technology and exercise.

Furthermore, City Poker is not only a fun game to play but you can also use it to give your pupils a lesson. As you can play it with your own set of questions you can cover a very wide range of topics from biology via history through to geography. The quizzes are particularly useful to test the children’s knowledge about specific topics.

On a school excursion teachers and pupils can use City Poker to explore an unknown city and learn about its history and characteristics in a playful way at the same time.
